Lady Macbeth is an interesting character. We first get a glimpse into her character in her soliloquy where she criticizes her husband, Macbeth, and talks about killing the king. I find it very interesting that Lady Macbeth is the person to take on this role. Especially since you'd think that a character like Macbeth would be cut out to want more power. Instead we find that Lady Macbeth is the one willing to do the dirty work in order to put Macbeth in a position of higher power.
This desire that Lady Macbeth has for more power makes me question her motives. Why would she want Macbeth to be King? What is in it for her? Also, I wonder if she realizes that killing the King is not the end of it. There are two heirs to the throne and even then Macbeth would have to be somehow supported or nominated into such a position. It intrigues me.
I also like how Lady Macbeth is open to criticizing Macbeth. I think that it gives him more depth and a realistic analysis of his character. Prior to her soliloquy Macbeth was only praised. She points out that he does have "flaws", if you can even consider them to be that. Personally, I only find them to be flaws in the eyes of somehow who is greedy.
At this point I find myself suspicious of Lady Macbeth's morals and motives. I'm excited to see how her character develops throughout the play.
I completely agree with your suspicions of Lady Macbeth's character. I think that she is hiding something. Does she just want what's best for her husband or is there something else, some ulterior motive? I think that this post provide a lot of intriguing questions to keep track of as we read farther into the play.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that Lady Macbeth is the one taking on the role and doing the dirty work. I also find it interesting how you asked the question of what is in it for her, because when you think about it, it is not an easy question to be answered. She also is open to criticizing Macbeth, and I think her desire for him to be king has split their relationship.
ReplyDeleteI also question Lady Macbeth's motives for desiring power so much. After all, the position doesn't benefit her that much, other than wealth and maybe prestige. The people of the land won't look up to her anymore after her evil deeds. It's interesting how Macbeth might get blamed for the murders, but she is really the mastermind behind the scheming. This is a sneaky and sly way for her to stay unblamed.
